FAQs

  • I have a computer with a windows operating system - will it work on Linux ? 
    SmallPond Linux servers will show your website on Windows and Mac computers providing cross platform languages are used in the building of the site. (e.g. HTML, FLASH, Perl, PHP). Linux Servers are tough and reliable. They have about 80% of the world server market and are cheaper to run than Windows servers.
    MS Windows specific functions like ASP, ASP.NET, Access, ODBC DSN need a windows server.
     

  • File Uploads :
    FTP / Microsoft FrontPage 98/2000/XP / Adobe Dreamweaver are supported.
     

  • PHP version 5.2.5: Safe Mode off - Global Permissions ON

  • MySQL version 5.0.51a

  • Perl :V5.8.8
    Do you allow shell access ? 
    No. We do not offer Telnet and SSH due to security issues


  • Backups
    SmallPond dedicated servers runs a RAID based disk redundancy solution, should any of the primary disk drives fail, a secondary disk drive can take over the work load with no loss of availability.
    Regular Automatic Backups
    Site Backups are made Daily, Weekly.
    Restoration from any of these points can be requested by contacting SmallPond Support.

  • I get free web space with my Internet Service Provider,
    Why should I buy space from SmallPond ?

    SmallPond gives you a permanent web site address using your own domain. This means if you change your service provider your website remains the same. There are no banner adds or popups attached.
     

  • How long will it take to set up my hosting space ?
    You will receive your welcome email within 8 hours which includes the necessary information to set up your web site. There is a temporary link to view your site until you domain becomes active.
